DAVID CRARY AP National Writer

NEW YORK — Snap, crackle … pot?

In this Sept. 25, 2008, file photo, Michael Phelps, winner of eight gold medals in the Beijing Olympics, smiles while holding a box of cereal with his image on it during a news conference in Baltimore. Bursting with indignation, legions of marijuana advocates are urging a boycott of Kellogg Co., including all of its popular munchies, for deciding to cut ties with Olympic hero Michael Phelps after he was photographed with a pot pipe.
AP

Bursting with indignation, legions of marijuana advocates are urging a boycott of Kellogg Co., including all of its popular munchies, for deciding to cut ties with Olympic hero Michael Phelps after he was photographed with a pot pipe.

The leader of one of the biggest legalize-pot organizations, the Marijuana Policy Project, called Kellogg’s action “hypocritical and disgusting,” and said he’d never seen his membership so angry, with more than 2,300 of them signing an online petition.

“Kellogg’s had no problem signing up Phelps when he had a conviction for drunk driving, an illegal act that could actually have killed someone,” said Rob Kampia, the group’s executive director. “To drop him for choosing to relax with a substance that’s safer than beer is an outrage, and it sends a dangerous message to young people.”

Also urging a boycott were the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, Students for Sensible Drug Policy and the Drug Policy Alliance. They urged their members to contact Kellogg to vent their views.

In one sign of the campaign’s impact, the Phelps saga took precedence over the tainted peanut butter outbreak in the recorded reply on Kellogg’s consumer hot line.

“If you would like to share your comments regarding our relationship with Michael Phelps, please press one to speak to a representative,” said the recording. “If you’re calling about the recent peanut butter recall, please press two now.”

Of Phelps’ big-name sponsors, Kellogg was the only one to publicly cut ties after the pot photo emerged. While it received some support, the giant food firm has also been singled out for mockery by comedians, bloggers and others.

On Saturday Night Live, Seth Myers questioned whether marijuana use was in fact at odds with Kellogg’s image.

“Every one of your mascots is a wild-eyed cartoon character with uncontrollable munchies,” Myers said. “Every one of your products sounds like a wish a genie granted at a Phish concert.”

I was reading the insert in American Bagger and came across an article written by Tobin Karn who is a lawyer and biker, outlining some of the reasons bikers get pulled over and cited in Sturgis.

Lack of proper eye protection – while you don’t have to wear a helmet, eye protection is still required. Don’t forget to take those sunglasses off the top of your head when getting on your bike.

Ape Hangers – In South Dakota your handgrips can not be at shoulder level or above.

Dragging your feet up to a stop or post stop – Somehow law enforcement has been able to constitute this as careless riding or an indication of alcohol consumption.

Burn outs – Don’t do them.

Drunk hooker on the back of the bike – will get you pulled over.

Revving your enging to show off your pipes – Yea, yea we all got them and you are impressing nobody especially the cops who will cite you for disturbing the peace. (Plus you just look like an idiot anyways)

Speeding – Speaks for itself.

Swerving within your own lane – You can get off this one in court but it will cost you time and money. Play it safe and don’t do it.

Riding beside another bike or passing a bike within your own lane – Not a good idea, its illegal.

Wrecking – Be cool there are an average of 250,000 riders present in a town the size of Mayberry on any given day of the rally. Most of them can’t ride, so watch out.

Riding Naked – While expected in the campgrounds, it is illegal anywhere else.

Riding Drunk – Speaks for itself.

Stopping because your buddy or lead bike got pulled over – Keep going, we all have cell phones. If you pull over, you will be the next person talking to the cops. They have a term for someone who does this, “its a gift”.

Wearing a Buffalo head with horns for a helmet – This alone is probable cause, save the crap for the campgrounds. BTW: Its not cool there either.

Not riding a Harley – Even cops have morals.

This is not exactly what the article said, but close.

They have attempted to make the whole process easier, but it takes just as long to get your new replacement license.

Washington has started a new program where you can get your license renewed right through the internet. The only way to do this is receive a letter from the DOL which contains a secret code. This is a good thing as long as you are not a procrastinator, like me, and don’t lose your “special” letter.

As usual, I put this off until the last minute and lost the letter. I figured “no problem” I’ll give them a call, get my number and renew my license and skip the hughe lines. After 1/2 hour of searching the web site for a phone number, I finally found one and gave them a call. I talked to a robotic woman who informed me that unless I had my original letter I was “out of luck” . She explained this number was secret and told me that if she gave out the number, it would no longer be a secret.

WHAT??? If I am not mistaken, all Washington State drivers licenses already have a unique ID on them. Why do we need a second secret code? I dont get it.
